Surf Fridays!

Seeing this clip from the 1972 film, Five Summer Stories made me feel so happy and peaceful. This one will have to go in the surf dvd collection. What is it about the 1970s? I love that era. The soundtrack consists of Beach Boys material from their albums, Holland and Surf's Up, the latter with some of the most beautiful cover artwork I've seen. The image really gets me.

Remember when you made time to really listen to the lyrics, closed your eyes, wondered and guessed what they were all about? Maybe we can do that today with this one.

Surf's Up - lyrics by Brian Wilson

A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
To a handsome man and baton
A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
Are you sleeping?

Hung velvet overtaken me
Dim chandelier awaken me
To a song dissolved in the dawn
The music hall a costly bow
The music all is lost for now
To a muted trumpeter swan
Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
Are you sleeping, Brother John?

Dove nested towers the hour was
Strike the street quicksilver moon
Carriage across the fog
Two-Step to lamplight cellar tune
The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne

The glass was raised, the fired rose
The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting
While at port, adieu or die

A choke of grief heart hardened I
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry

Surf's Up
Aboard a tidal wave
Come about hard and join
The young and often spring you gave
I heard the word
Wonderful thing
A children's song

Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
A children's song
Have you listened as they played
Their song is love
And the children know the way
That's why the child is the father to the man
Child, child, child, child, child
Child, child, child, child, child
Na na na na na na na na
Child, child, child, child, child
That's why the child is the father to the man
Child, child, child, child, child

I don't surf, I can barely swim, but learning to be a better swimmer so I can eventually surf is on my new beginnings list on my blog. I'm so loving your blog!!!!! It's the inspiration I need to achieve my goal :)

Hi Jamie W.,
This is a neat clip! My mom has an original poster for this movie from when she used to see surf films here in SF.
That's a cool image on the album cover. I believe it's called "End of the Trail". They used it in a lot of promotional material for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in SF. (Sorry, I'm a SF history nerd ;) )
Thanks for sharing!

That's one of my favorite Brian Wilson tunes. So surreal and almost eerie in that '70s WTF way... Very operatic as well! The album art for the 8-track is also amazing. Love it.

Lee, thanks!

Chum, that is so cool. Friday was my first time hearing this very tune and I'm getting addicted. One of my favorite bands is The Mother Hips and they always cite the Beach Boys as one of their influences. These tunes make me understand why.
