Surf Fridays!

Snapshot I took of Steamer Lane in May, 2005

Jay and I are in the midst of attending nearly every flick at the San Francisco Film Noir Festival. These movies are priceless and the sold out crowds at the Castro really make it fun. Any other noir fans out there?

Hopefully we'll get water logged on Sunday, though sadly we won't be going to Half Moon Bay due to this recent spill. Thanks to the Surfrider Foundation for keeping us informed. I hope you all have a gorgeous weekend.

My Favorite GoPro Videos

Cyrus filming for "Stoked and Broke" from Korduroy.

That little video was too short! What a tease. I can't wait to see that movie. Stoked and Broke. I love that title.

Here's my other favorite GoPro vid, by Christian Wach. I love how it starts underwater in some sea grass and the whole thing reminds me of a sweet summer love story.

Christian & Cyrus not only have mad surf and film skills, they're also fantastic at picking out a sublime tune.

GOLD from Christian Wach.

Surf Fridays!

I got a small, rectangular piece of hydrodynamic foam at a garage sale and took it out for a spin a couple of weeks ago. I had so much fun - really cold water but that hat and some booties kept me feeling alright. I can't wait to go bodyboarding as soon as this rain lets up.

I think everyone in Cali is pretty frustrated with all this rain as far as not being able to surf. Daydream, watch movies, brush up on politics, discover new blogs, go to yoga, ride your bike, take photos, write letters, make art...Hang in there. If you're out in the world having fun in the water, brag about it! Australia? Happy Surf Fridays to you!

Color Fields

I found a couple of monotypes I printed that I never posted. I have a tiny studio in a town nearby, but I'm moving it home to our garage this month. Jay and I are going to try and make a cool art space out of it. Garages are underrated.

Hawaiian Throw-Net

When I'm at an antique shop, the main thing I get excited about are old postcards. I like this one, mailed from Lahaina in 1961. Who are you, Lit-Lit?

A few facts about a great surfer and shaper, David Nuuhiwa...

- He was born in Honolulu in 1948 and moved to Southern California as a young teenager.
- As a youngster he surfed with Donald Takayama and quickly became an underground sensation.
- He's 6'2 and his nickname is the Flyin Hawaiian.
- His noserides could last up to 15 seconds at a time.
- He was ahead of his time in his experimentation with fish designs.
- David hung out with Jimi Hendrix in Maui while making the psychedelic film, Rainbow Bridge.
- In the future, David would like to see surf contests giving more money to charities.
- He would like to have an "old dudes" surf tour like the golfers have.
- You can have a one-on-one surf and coaching session with David in Orange County.
- You can see more of David longboarding in this vintage clip.

It would be cool to see a future interview with David Nuuhiwa on Liquid Salt (hint, hint).

Have a great weekend everyone!
